With results starting to come in, U.S. media are projecting Democratic Senator Barack Obama has won his party's presidential primary election, held Tuesday in Virginia. Republican Senator John McCain was projected to win the state for his party.
Obama is hoping to erase the slim lead that rival Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton has in the total number of delegates needed to win their party's nomination.
McCain faced strong competition in Virginia from former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Both parties also held primaries in the nation's capital of Washington, D.C., and the state of Maryland.
The polls have closed in Washington, but a judge extended voting hours in Maryland due to bad weather.
Clinton is already looking past Tuesday's primaries to contests March 4 in Texas and Ohio, where polls show the former first lady in the lead.
Nationwide, McCain has already won more than half of the delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination. But Huckabee has ignored calls from McCain's campaign to drop out of the race.
