Severe Weather, Tornado Hit Memphis

Severe weather, including a reported tornado, hit Memphis, Tenn., Tuesday, leaving thousands without power and complicating things for Super Tuesday voters at the polls.

At least 11,000 power outages were reported in Shelby County, Tennessee, where Memphis is located, after severe weather swept through the area Tuesday afternoon, reported WAPT-TV in Jackson, Miss.

A 50-foot wall collapsed at a mall in southeast Memphis and a building was on fire elsewhere in the Memphis area, WAPT reported.

Officials also reported that an unknown number of people were trapped in an industrial plant.

A large tornado was spotted at elsewhere in Memphis, said weather officials.

Airport officials also reported damage. They said there was major damage to the FedEx airport hangar at the Memphis International Airport.
