A pub in New York City has banned Danny Boy, blaming the depressing lyrics that were written by someone who never went to Ireland and the fact that it isn’t part of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Ireland.
Right, because those silly green hats are all over Dublin this month.
Let’s hear it for the Irish pub owner who’s had it with the depressing dirge and is banning it in his mid-town NYC bucket of suds. A Detroit hoistel is planning a 50-hour “Danny Boy” marathon. Sounds like Irish hell. Except the lyrics were written by a Pommie bastid who never set foot on Erin’s emerald shore. 1915 debut by opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink sounds a little like Al O’Jolson in greenface.
AndStep in comments invites a Danny Boy marathon. Your Danny Boy yarns welcomed.
