Bob Lobel and other icons of WBZ television news casts were shown the door yesterday in one hell of surprising house cleaning. I'm surprised that stalwart, Jack Williams (best voice on Boston news EVER), wasn't on the list.
Bob Lobel is an icon of sportscasting here in Boston and one of the only reasons to watch WBZ lately. He had the sports scene wired and was even fodder for the gossip portions of newspapers and dailies in this town.
I had the fortunate opportunity to intern in the WBZ studios and within the sports department. Bob was great to learn from and to also see how professional he was during the creation of his sportscasts at 11. Plus he reminded me of my Uncle Bob.
The new GM at WBZ has officially shot himself in the temple if he expects the newscasts to get any better. One hopes that Lobel ends up on another Boston television station that appreciates his focus and delivery. (Please for the love of everything that is holy don't go to Channel 7 Bob....) Maybe NESN can get him to host a show. Anything to keep this man locked in with the Boston sports scene.
Lobel, Kulhawik, and Wahle to leave
